We've known The Mothershoppers for a while now. Kicking Mother-fashion into gear and giving us tips on how to work the school run. They give you practi-cool clothes for mums who want to get dressed and not stressed. We'll have some of that!. We caught up with them a few weeks ago and asked them about their 0-10. If you want to check out more about how to fashion your Mum wardrobe then check out their instagram @mothershopppers or mothershoppers.com
Hello and welcome to The Parent Post.
1. Who are you and what do you do?
MotherShoppers: Gemma, mum of one and Bertie, mum of two. We met 10 years ago on an editorial shoot in an East London warehouse and have been friends & style partners ever since.
We both felt our style needed refreshing after having our kids so we started this blog to help other mums, like ourselves, rediscover their personal style. We understand that being a mother can mean being time and cash poor so we also take that into consideration. We hope to be your sartorial agony aunts; showing you useful hacks, easy wardrobe updates and the best sales and discount codes.
2. Where do you live and how many children do you have?
Bertie - Leyton, 2 kids, Alma 3yrs, Herb 3 months
Gemma - Surrey with my husband & 6 year old son, Archie.
3. Describe your Parenting style in three words
Bertie - Instinctual, loving, (very) unstructured!
Gemma - Loving, relaxed, calm
…And now if we were to ask your kids to describe your Parenting style in three words what would they say?
Bertie - Ha! Hmmm not sure what Alma would say- probably something quite rude.
Gemma - Kind, cuddly, fun (hopefully!) And late, probably!!
4. What was the last picture you took on your phone?
Bertie - A pic of Herb -I'm obsessed with trying to catch his dimples. I haven't been quick enough yet.
Gemma - A screenshot of an Instagram outfit I liked. My phone is full of Archie, clothes and house stuff.
5. Describe a typical day for The Mothershoppers...
Bertie - I'm woken by Herb around 5 or 6am and usually whilst I'm feeding him Alma comes and gets into bed with us too and plays on the CBeebies app on my tablet. We go downstairs and leave dad in bed (he often works late and needs a lie in) to make porridge or pancakes. The rest of the day really depends on many factors, if Alma has nursery I take her then meet friends for lunch with Herb or relax and catch up on sleep. If Alma is home I try to take her out for a bit (weather permitting) to the park or local farm and if Sam my partner is off work we all hang out as a family, usually at home, maybe popping out for a walk or lunch. Dinner, bath and bedtime starts around 5pm. I catch up on emails and IG throughout the day (and night!)
- I'm in charge of wardrobe on Loose Women 3 days a week (I job share with Bertie who's currently on maternity leave) where there's no such thing as a typical day! There are often crazy costume changes mid show. I'm lucky it's flexible so I get to do the school run/pick up 3 days a week.
On my days off while Archie's at school I try to work on the blog, catch up with emails & friends, go to Pilates to ease my stylist shoulder. We're currently renovating a 70s house & living in a building site so I'm spending a lot of time sourcing things for that. After school we often go to the park with friends. At home there's a lot of Lego building & transformer playing!
6. Are you there yet? And where is there?
Bertie - not there yet! Nowhere near! And I have no idea where 'there' is. I don't like to think further than a few months ahead. I try to live in the present as much as possible.
Gemma - God no but getting there, though not sure where there is! This year has been a good one so far. Starting the blog after talking about it for so long has been a big step. And I turned 40 in the summer so am quite excited to see where my 40's take me!
7. Funniest or most tragic Parenting moment to date?
Bertie - I was recently in a public toilet with Alma and she said " Mummy you're doing a POO!" really loudly (I wasn't!)
Gemma - So many. One that sticks out is being very hungover at a kids party, going in to help my son with a costume malfunction, missing the step, falling & landing on him & narrowly missing wiping out several other kids much to the amusement of the entertainer. And everyone else!
8. Let’s talk about sleep… how much do you get a night?
Bertie - Ha!! I'm much more relaxed about it with baby number 2. I've only had one day when I really felt shitty from lack of sleep and it's cos I compared my life to someone on IG- never do that!! I keep my expectations rock bottom and then I'm always pretty pleased with how much sleep I'm getting. Herb usually goes to bed when I do at 9pm and we are both asleep by 10pm. He wakes for feeds at 1am then 4or 5am but this changes all the time (and that's an example of good night)
Gemma - 6-7 hours, could be more but I'm a night owl and find it hard to go to bed. Archie wakes around 6.30, occasionally 7 which feels like a lie in depressingly!
9. How do you make sure it’s a Good Yawning?
Bertie - I'm a morning person! I like to have a big coffee first thing and get showered n dressed n if I'm lucky put some make up on whilst Herb is napping and Alma is playing. If we then get out the house too by 10am I feel like superwoman. (the downside is that by 4pm I'm a zombie)
Gemma - It takes me a long time to wake up in the mornings, helped by the husband who always brings me a cup of tea in bed. And I try to decide what I'm wearing the night before which doesn't always happen, but definitely helps.
10. Let’s talk about GIN. Mother’s Ruin or Mother’s Saviour? How do you relax?
Bertie - I LOVE gin! I haven't drunk much still since before I was pregnant as I only need one glass to feel the effects, although saying that I am sat having a sneaky G&T right now. I'm so tired by the evening that it only takes a few pages of a book and I'm asleep as soon as Herb is. Reading is my escapism- I just finished 'Not Working' by Lisa Owens. It's very funny, I recommend it.
Gemma - Saviour!! That or a glass of red wine. Although I keep trying not to drink in the week (not very successfully), unless I'm out. If I'm home we love a Netflix series. I always have a night time tea to try & unwind and read my kindle once finally in bed.
