Rob Da Bank is the founder of Sunday Best, a Radio One DJ and creator of Camp Bestival - a British festival and the "little sister" of Bestival. The Festival is held annually, in July, at Lulworth Castle in Dorset and is targeted at families with small children.
Rob and his wife (Josie Da Bank - who also curates the festival) live on the Isle of Wight with their four sons.
In the run up to Camp Bestival, we thought we'd catch up with the mighty Dad of four to find out about parenthood and get some inside info on what to do on site. We are VERY excited to be heading off with the family to Lulworth at the end of the month and plan to embrace some camping and festival action (more on this to follow). Take a look below to get some top tips from Rob on what he enjoys at his festival with the kids, and also what floats Mr Tumble's boat.
Wish us luck with the camping!
Hi Rob, Welcome to the Parent Post, where are you today?
I’m on the sunny Isle Of Wight just having dropped 3 out of 4 of the kids off to school and now off to do a radio interview, and a photo shoot for a new range of kids clothes..kind of rock n’ roll but not really!
Describe a typical Camp Bestival weekend for you? Is it all work, work, work or do you get to have some fun too?
I make sure I have fun! Its actually probably my favourite weekend of the year.. we camp with all our mates in a huge posse and everyone looks after each others kids and we just have a great time juggling what we want to see with what the kids want to see. We made Camp Bestival a really packed show with so much to do that there’s never a dull moment.
We love that you’re a family man, when you do have time off, what's your favourite thing to do with your kids at Camp Bestival?
They make me go on the Big Wheel and the Helter Skelter which i hate…sort of ;) we watch The Insect Circus with Grandpa who loves that, and then we eat some amazing food from DJ BBQ at The Feast Collective. My eldest son Arlo who’s 11 will wanna try and meet a rapper or someone like Louisa Johnson so I’ll try and do that, but I really don’t hang out backstage with them…we get stuck in!
Describe your Parenting style in three words.
Relaxed, strict, confusing.
…And now if we were to ask your kids to describe your Parenting style in three words, what would they say?
Busy, busy, busy.
What was the last picture you took on your phone?
One of my son Merlin catching a mackerel off our own little boat which was very satisfying…I cooked it up with some soy sauce, ginger, garlic and honey..it was lovely!
What tips would you give to a family attending Camp Bestival for the first time this year?
Take your time, pace yourself and don’t worry if the kids stay up late or break some rules. Its hard to do but maybe go with the flow for once.
Let’s talk about sleep… how much do you get a night?
I really try for 8 hours but normally 6-7…I go to bed by 10pm or 11pm, but I like getting up early before everyone else - its the only headspace I get!
How do you make sure it’s a Good Yawning at Camp Bestival?
Caffeine and a solid breakfast…I can’t function unless I’ve eaten.
Mr Tumble is a Camp Bestival veteran, in fact we hear he pulls one of the biggest crowds of the weekend. What’s his rider like?
Vodka, gin, tequila, dancing girls…no I think its some water and juices! He’s the easiest pop star on the show. He’s done every Camp Bestival and he’s still a huge pull. He’s like Elvis for 5 year olds!
